Innovate through the complexity of healthcare using Human Centered Design

Program Overview

The Center for Innovation empowers you with the knowledge, tools, and skills to better understand the world around us. Our multi-disciplinary approach is rooted in empathy and infused with proven methods to promote non-linear thinking to address the complex challenges we face at St. Joseph’s Health. The skills learned in this course will help you create meaningful connections to the people we serve and provide practical application of the methods you learn.

Human centered design is beneficial for those who seek complimentary skills that will actively assist them in widening their point of view, more deeply understand the thoughts, beliefs, and behavior of those around them, and apply this knowledge to the development and implementation of innovative designs.

CFI emphasizes a “learn by doing” approach. Participants practice a cyclical process of action and reflection. Learning modules are divided into three phases of the design process: learn in context from the people in the system, Frame the design opportunities in a generative way, make low fidelity representations of concepts to quickly validate design hypothesis. Specific skills are taught within each learn, frame, make module.

The critical requirement for these courses is a curious mindset. Courses are anchored in the exploration and value of lived experience so participants from all departments are encouraged to apply.

  • Discover the tools to engage people in their context, discover their unmet needs, and uncover the knowledge of their lived experience

  • Apply frameworks to

  • Learn by doing

Specific skills are taught within each learn, frame, make module. Participants can take all modules or focus on specific skills within a design phase.

Each module will:

  • Explore use cases through activity based learning.

  • Support with theory to understand the mechanics of why methods work.

  • Emphasize hospital specific design opportunities.

  • Formatted ½ lecture ½ guided practice
